Kuvaus

Doctoral graduates in computational science see the computer as essentially a research instrument, a tool to gain new knowledge through computation. They apply the tool to empirical data or mathematical models targeting problems from a wide variety of scientific domains. Computational science has close connections with applied mathematics, and, in comparison to computer science, there is a greater emphasis on algorithms that model continuous quantities rather than discrete data structures.

Osaamistavoitteet

A doctoral graduate in Computational Science:

  • is able to evaluate the relevance of different computational approaches in the given context
  • is able to analyze the essentials of the theories behind the computations
  • understands the processes behind the data that is analyzed
  • is able to assess critically the used methods and the obtained results using systematic testing and validation techniques
