Course description

This course focuses on information management and evaluation, critical reading, and academic communication skills in English. During the course students will, among other tasks, work in teams, read and discuss discipline-specific research and deliver a presentation. The coursework advances academic literacies, terminology, interactive communication, and peer- and self-assessment strategies for further development in the field and future profession, as well as confidence in using English.

Osaamistavoitteet

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to


  • be able to locate, identify and critically analyse academic texts from their field, with a view to adopting a research-based approach to their communication in academic and work life settings.
  • be aware of the principles of how academic texts are constructed and use that knowledge when analysing texts and constructing arguments for communication.
  • be able to purposefully present research information in a well-structured and accessible manner in a variety of interaction settings, taking into account the needs of the audience.
  • be able to utilise and participate in feedback in order to reflect on their strengths and areas of development as a communicator of English.
  • be able to reflect on and adjust to both intercultural and interdisciplinary contexts when communicating in group and individual situations.
  • be aware of the benefits of multilingualism in their field of study, and the advantages of utilising their full language repertoire throughout the research process.

TARGET GROUPS: Primarily second year JYU degree students

Bachelor level Students from the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences are required to take 4 ECTS during this course. As such, they will be required to complete an additional major task on the course which will be outlined to them by the teacher of the course.

The exemption exam is intended as an option for students who already master the skills developed during the academic reading and communication skills course. Before signing up to the written exam part, you need to first pass the oral communication skills test.
