LYTA1001 Ethics in Sport (1–3 op)

At the beginning of the lectures a moral sociological framework for the study of the ethics of sport is formed. After that, the tasks and duties of FINCIS, who is responsible for handling ethical issues in sport in Finland, and other relevant international actors are introduced. Representatives of FINCIS present the international treaties, legislation and codes related to ethics in sport and the actors in the field. Special attention is targeted towards anti-doping activities in sports, manipulation of sport competitions and spectator safety and comfort. In addition question related to general ethics as well as current questions in ethics in sports are addressed. The lectures will be concluded with discussions on the problems raised during the lectures. Through the literature included in the course, the student delves deeper into the course theme from the perspective of philosophical ethics.
Completion methods:Method 1 (1 ECTS): Active participation in lectures (10 hours) and writing assignment (learning log).
Method 2 (3 ECTS): Active participation in lectures (10 hours), writing assignment (learning log) and a reading assignment (a book exam). You can take the book exam in Exam-system during the same semester with the lectures.
Bachelor students of the Social Sciences of Sport (LYT) and Master’s degree students in Responsible Management and Business of Sport: compulsory method 2 (3 ECTS).

Osaamistavoitteet
- identify special questions and problems within ethics of sport and physical activity
- identify how sport ethics in connected to the general value base, laws and norms of the society
- identify the governing international and national organisations, rules, regulations, and legal and other agreements that regulate and monitor ethics in sport
- engage in analytical and critical discussion on issues of values and morals in sport
