KEMY2000 SUS-waste: Implementing Sustainability in Waste Management (3 op)

The course addresses key challenges on the path toward sustainability, including the implementation of new technologies, optimization of waste management logistics, and shifting societal attitudes toward waste generation.A unique aspect of the course is its holistic approach to waste-related problems, covering e.g. mining and construction waste, electronic, and hazardous waste, through both environmental and social lenses. The course also emphasizes the importance of raw material recovery and promotes circular economy practices as essential components of sustainable development. 

• Understanding the challenges in consumption of resources and how transition to circular economy can help.
• Knowledge in scientific theories, technical approaches, laboratory and field methodologies and practical challenges necessary in the waste management transition to sustainability and circular economy.
• Knowledge on material flows and recycling, recovery processes, understanding the processes of environmental assessment, material and energy flow analysis, life cycle analysis, multi-criteria assessment, cost-benefit and eco-efficiency analysis.
• Related legislative issues in different regions, and the trends at the global scale.
• Practical skills and competence-based learning includes international case study analyses and work with environmental problems considering tangible and intangible benefit valuation principles.
