Course description

This course introduces students to Chinese social values and practices through a touch on Chinese history and traditions. 

Main content 

The course will

• walk students through a sketch of Chinese history
• introduce students to a basic understanding of Chinese traditional philosophies and ideologies that have a lasting impact upon Chinese society such as Confucianism, Daoism and Sun Tzu ’s Art of War
• provide students with opportunities to explore a variety of traditions and customs common in contemporary Chinese society
• cover useful Chinese business philosophical notions such as “Guanxi” and “Mianzi”
• provide practical tips of business etiquette including table manners, gift giving traditions etc.

On the completion of the course, the student is expected to

• be aware of different aspects of Chinese traditions and practices
• be able to develop a basic understanding of contemporary society and life in China
• learn to act and interact more confidently with Chinese people both in social and business contexts.
