XENX040 Intensive Summer Course in Academic English (4 op)

Course description

This is an intensive preparatory course organized in August. The aim of this course is to prepare students for studying their major through English.

Main content

• Activating, practicing and improving listening, speaking and reading and writing skills in English
• Discussing intercultural differences in academic conventions, focusing on general academic study skills needed to study at the University of Jyväskylä
• Typical tasks include reading, listening, and speaking exercises, finding and evaluating information, writing an essay and leading a class discussion.
  

By the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

• employ effective learning strategies for different academic contexts and assignments
• communicate and interact confidently in informal and formal situations
• develop their English writing skills according to academic conventions
• recognize different study practices between their home university and the University of Jyväskylä
• reflect on and set goals for developing their English language and communication skills
