Course description
The course provides practical support for participants embarking on writing the summary part of their own article-based dissertation. Besides providing a safe space to share individual goals and experiences, the course offers helpful guidelines and concrete examples for writing each section of the dissertation. Participants explore and more closely examine published dissertations within their field, focusing on structure, rhetorical moves, and visual design, to help them plan their own dissertation.

- The article-based dissertation: objectives, required competencies, JYU general guidelines and faculty-specific requirements.
- Permission issues, reusing (parts of) your own works.
- The overall function of the dissertation; the importance of visual design.
- Tips on various sections with examples: the dissertation title, front cover illustrations, and epigraphs, the abstract, the acknowledgement section, the introduction, the theoretical/conceptual framework, overview of the articles, discussion/conclusion.
Osaamistavoitteet
On completion of the course, participants are expected to…
- understand the basic function and overall purpose of the article-based dissertation.
- be familiar with the requirements for the basic structure of the dissertation, as well as possible variations within their respective field of inquiry.
- demonstrate purposeful application of the principles and rhetorical strategies covered in class when planning to write the summary part of their own dissertation.
