Course description

The course provides hands-on guidance on publishing academic journal articles. Participants will gain insights into the essential aspects of publishing and get equipped with skills to handle the intricacies of the journal selection and publishing process. Special emphasis is given to effective communication with peer reviewers, including approaches and strategies for navigating challenging situations. The course also promotes critical awareness and encourages participants to make informed publication decisions that align with their individual values and goals.

• Authorship, international guidelines, ethics of publishing
• Types of journals, benefits and challenges of publishing in specific journals; impact, language, and publication choices, issues in contemporary global academia.
• Journal evaluation, identifying top journals, the meaning of journal metrics, traditional and alternative metrics and impact, predatory journals, unethical journal practices; publishing models, open access publishing.
• Manuscript categories: types of papers accepted by journals.
• Identifying potential journals and selecting the most appropriate journal for a manuscript.
• The publishing process, roles and responsibilities, common issues with the manuscript; the submission process, writing a pre-submission inquiry and submission cover letter.
• Types of peer review and the peer review process; responding to peer review: emotional management, responding to the reviewers’ comments, dealing with challenging situations, drafting the revision cover letter.

On completion of the course, participants are expected to…

• understand the benefits and challenges of publishing in different types of academic journals.
• be able to select the most suitable academic journals for their own manuscripts.
• understand the essential steps in preparing an article for publication and the different stages of the publishing process.
• know how to communicate effectively during the peer review process.
