This course delves into digitalization and its associated phenomena, focusing on the emergence of new technologies and innovative digital business models they enable. It examines digitalization from the perspectives of individuals, organizations, and broader societal impacts. To understand these processes, the course employs theoretical concepts like actor-network theory and sociomaterialism.

Suoritustavat

The course includes lectures and reading materials. Lectures are available as live video sessions and / or video recordings. Reading groups meet via videoconference applications, such as Zoom. Students can review reading materials either in these groups or individually, though participation in reading groups is highly recommended. The primary assignment is a learning diary.

Arviointiperusteet

The learning diary's assessment determines the entire course grade. This assessment focuses on the analytical depth and the ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical examples.

Upon completing this course, students will understand the transformative role of digitalization and new technologies in practice. They will be able to analyze and interpret technological transformations using concepts from the information systems field. The course aims to develop students' abilities in assessing technological changes, analyzing new technology's impact on users, organizations, understanding and developing business models for technology companies, and enhancing creative and critical thinking skills.

The course is primarily intended for first-year master’s degree students in information systems. It assumes a basic understanding of technology's role in the everyday life of individuals and organizations, as well as digital business and its development. However, in-depth analysis of technological phenomena and digitalization through scientific literature's theoretical frameworks has not been a part of their previous studies.
