Kuvaus

Introduction to a number of imaging techniques used in depiction and evaluation of micro and nano sized objects. The imaging techniques included are: scanning electron microscopy, helium ion microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, confocal microscopy and x-ray tomography.

Each imaging technique includes:

  1. Introduction lecture explaining the operational principle.
  2. Laboratory session with hands-on imaging of typical nano and/or micro scale samples. 
  3. Dialogue-lecture on how to prepare the imaging data and write the lab report. 
  4. Writing of lab report.

At the end of the course a Concluding Seminar is held with presentations and Q&A on each imaging technique.  

Osaamistavoitteet

The student has gained a basic understanding of the principles of operation for the introduced imaging techniques: scanning electron microscopy, helium ion microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, confocal microscopy and x-ray tomography.

The student has gained understanding of the difference in sample properties that can be imaged with different techniques.

The student has acquired hands-on experience from imaging of appropriate samples with the above mentioned imaging techniques.

The student has the knowledge to choose the best imaging method for a certain nano or micro scale sample.
