KYBS3042 Trends in Cyber Security (5 op)

The course KYBS3042 Trends in Cyber Security aims to introduce and provide knowledge on key and current themes in cyber security. The course is theme-based, and each week we will cover a different theme, such as, cyber-bullying, cyber-disinformation, cyber-scamming, etc. Students will be expected to attend/watch lectures, undertake the assignments, and read from the key texts recommended for the course. It is a non-technical course.

The course will include the following themes:

• cyber-crime and scams (e.g., phishing scams, spoofing, romance scammer, ransomware attacks)
• cyber-bullying/cyber-harassment
• cyber-disinformation & fake news scams
• social media malicious campaigns
• cyber-deception (e.g., crowdturfing, astroturfing)
• national cyber incident cases (e.g., cyber terrorism, cyber war, espionage/spying)

This course complements the Information Security Management course by studying contemporary cyber security threats that are not directly targeting the organization and information assets. The students will develop both theoretical and practical understanding of the techniques used in the selected cyber security topics. The students will gain knowledge and understanding of key countermeasures that could make cyberspace a safer environment.

Learning Outcomes

• Gain knowledge on key and current themes in cyber security that are not directly targeting the organization and information assets.
• Understand cyber security-related topics within different domains (individual, organisation and society), and how they relate to each other.
• Acquire theoretical and practical knowledge on cyber security incidents and key countermeasures that could make cyberspace a safer environment.
• Learn how to independently acquire knowledge and critically evaluate relevant research articles in some of the leading academic journals and conference proceedings.

Study materials will be a combination of academic articles and other materials available online, including, industry reports, news articles, and online videos.
