IHMJ3205 Basics of ATLAS.ti qualitative data analysis software (1–2 op)
Kuvaus
There are various kinds of computer software available for qualitative data analysis. They enable the handling, organising, and analysing large textual research materials as well as various forms of images and audio and video files. This course aims to assist researchers in the start and basic usage of ATLAS.ti qualitative data analysis software. The course is open to PhD researchers and, if there is room left, also to other researchers who are interested in utilising ATLAS.ti in their qualitative research.
During the course the following topics will be addressed:
- ATLAS.ti licences, different versions, and use with other software
- Main ideology, basic concepts, and the interface of ATLAS.ti
- Various types of research materials in ATLAS.ti
- Preparation of the research material and adding it to the projects
- Basic tools and functions of the software
- Various ways of doing the analysis and making interpretations
- Benefits and limitations of the usage of the software.
During the training the Windows version of ATLAS.ti will be used for demonstrations. Also Mac users are welcome to participate and the demonstrations will offer some guidance to them as well. However, the Mac interface and some of the tools differ from the ones in Windows.
The course consists of pre-assignment, lectures, demonstrations, and practical training.
Please note that you will be able to participate if you are within in the maximum AND you deliver the pre-assignment by the deadline. (If not, the place will be given to the next one in line.) Participants will get the guidelines for the pre-assignment beforehand.
Osaamistavoitteet

- are acquainted with the main ideology, basic concepts, and the interface of ATLAS.ti
- understand the benefits and limitations of the usage of the software in qualitative data analysis
- are able to create new projects, use basic tools and functions of the software, and utilise the software in their own qualitative data analysis with various data (e.g., text, images, audio, and video)
- are motivated to use the software and start their own qualitative data analysis process.
Oppimateriaalit
Participants can bring their own qualitative research material with them or do the practical training with ready-made research material provided by the lecturers. Participants will get more detailed guidelines for preparation before the course.
