Doctoral students are required to show proficiency in a study subject related to their dissertation research. It is strongly recommended that the doctoral student completes this course during her/his first year.
The subject/text is decided with the immediate supervisor(s) and approved by a responsible professor from the doctoral program steering group. The number of credits earned is determined by the depth and extent of the texts used in preparation for the exam. Proficiency can be shown in a variety of ways, decided together with the student and supervisor.
· A written examination based on a textbook covering the student’s major subject.
· A learning diary prepared by the student covering texts (e.g. books, articles) related to the student’s major subject.
· A literature review on the thesis topic. The student prepares the literature review on her/his own. The literature review is not included in the article-based dissertation.
Possible completion modes must be approved by the responsible professor from the doctoral programme steering board with closest experience in the student’s major study subject.
Osaamistavoitteet
Upon completion, the student will
- have good theoretical/methodological knowledge on the thesis topic.
- have broadened her/his perspective concerning the topic of the thesis.

This course is required for all doctoral researchers in the Doctoral Programme in Biological and Environmental Science (min. 4 ECTS)
A maximum of 8 ECTS can be included in this course.
