Let’s learn to speak some Dutch together (CEFR- A1). Both Finnish and exchange students are welcome

In this course, learners will develop their language skills while also exploring Dutch and Belgian culture. We will also discuss life at university for those who plan to go on an exchange to a Dutch speaking country.

This course focuses on using language for communication by training all 5 basic language skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing, and cultural awareness. During the course some lessons will be taught according to the ‘Flipping the classroom’-principle: students will be expected to prepare for some lessons watching videos online in which theory (grammar for example) is explained. During the next lesson this theory will be put into practice by in class discussions and in class individual and group assignments. When in class, learners are expected to actively participate and engage in coursework.

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

be able to introduce themselves, including information about who they are and where they live, as well as information about their interests, feelings and studies

be able to ask and answer simple questions about themselves, their immediate needs, and very familiar topics;

be able to use simple standard sentences to ask for clarification, repetition, or help

be able to make or cancel an appointment both oral and written

understand and follow simple instructions associated with everyday situations

understand the main idea and some details of short spoken texts and dialogues

understand the main idea and some details of short written texts

be able to fill out written forms and write simple texts about themselves and their interests

feel comfortable in an environment where Dutch or Flemish is spoken

understand a little about Dutch and Belgian culture and manners

be familiar with some academic vocabulary and academic cultural differences in Belgium and the Netherlands

Overall, this course aims at reaching A1 level, as outlined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
