Content
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the main trends and directions in current research on language (use) as a socially and culturally embedded phenomenon, with an eye on better understanding processes and practices of intercultural communication. Topics covered include: language and thinking, language as social action, the social value of speech, and the complex relationships between language and community, identity, and representation.
Completion methods
Lectures, presentations, written assignment.
Assessment details
Passing the course requires completion of all required assignments in line with stated learning outcomes. An 80% attendance requirement is applied. Grade-specific assessment criteria are introduced in the course.

After completing the course the student will be able to
- understand the main relevant concepts and frameworks in the study of language (use) as a socially and culturally embedded phenomenon
- identify the main trends and directions in current research in this field
- understand current debates concerning the intersection of language, communication, and society
- critically reflect upon the role of language (use) in ongoing social processes and current societal transformations
- apply the relevant theoretical and methodological tools for analyzing the role of language (use) in such processes.
