IHMJ2114 Big Data: knowledge discovery from educational data (2 op)
Lectures on the definitions and application domains of Big Data paradigm, especially Educational Knowledge Discovery as a method of Knowledge Mining. Various approaches will be reviewed and ways to apply Knowledge Discovery in the application domain of Educational Knowledge Discovery. Some time will be spend in discussing the challenges of learning and modelling Big Data. Knowledge Discovery as a data mining method will be presented, and discuss its application in scientific literature mapping. Also the benefits and challenges of the approach will be discussed. There is a lecture on the basic issues of applying Big Data in terms of Semantic Web and Linked Data and present some concrete use cases.
1) Students will know the meaning of the concepts of Big Data, Knowledge Discovery, Data mining and other related basic concepts. 2) Students will know how a variety of Knowledge Discovery methods are used in various application domains. 3) Students will be introduced to various approaches to Big Data. 4) Students will critically evaluate a few published examples of Big Data in social and human sciences
Completion modes: Lectures and a Post-course assignment: After the lectures, the students are given a few articles of some scientific attempts to apply Big Data in different domain areas. In addition, they are supposed to find and select (“google”) at least two articles that they consider as related work to the course issues. The post-course assignment is to write a 3-4 page analysis based of these articles to meet the last (4th) goal of this course.
