Research design and strategy in qualitative research
Qualitative research draws on multiple interpretive practices. Often the researcher is a bricoleur who tests different methodological tools and constructs the method from various options. However, questions to research material, theories and methods need to be aligned and justified. In a doctoral thesis, the researcher needs to reflect on the choices made and explain how the research process proceeded. What are the main choices of research design and strategy and when are they settled? Can one change the course and use different strategies and methods?
Visuaaliset menetelmät tutkimuksen apuna: ikonografia ja visuaalisen kulttuurin tutkimus lähestymistapoina.
Luennolla tutustaan kuvien ja visuaalisen aineiston muutamiin keskeisiin analyysimalleihin ja teoreettisiin lähestymistapoihin. Opetus sisältää ryhmätehtäviä.
Conversation Analysis (CA)
These two sessions will offer an introduction to Conversation Analysis (CA) as a research methodology investigating structures of social interaction. We will look at what CA is, how it is used, and for what kinds of research questions and data.
Both sessions have a lecture part at the beginning and a demo at the end of the session. During the first session, we will talk about the history, ontology, and some key principles of CA, and we will practice doing a “basic” kind of sequential analysis. During the second session, more recent lines of research within CA are presented (multimodality, sensoriality, interaction with/around technology, etc.), with some practical tasks in the end. You will asked to write a short assignment on the basis of the lectures.
Statistical analysis
The basics of statistics: when, how, why. How to do basic descriptive analysis, the basics needed in understanding quantitative research papers. In session 1, we focus on the principles and methods of quantitative research, including its metatheoretical foundations as well as cover some basic statistical analyses.
In session two, we focus on conducting statistical analyses with an emphasis on understanding quantitative research papers.
Discourse analysis
Objectives of the course: On completion of the course, participants are expected to: be familiar with the historical development of discourse as a field of study know different theoretical and methodological approaches to (critical) discourse studies. Identify different topics (research foci) as studied in (critical) discourse studies.
Understand how to operationalize specific discourse analytical approaches in a discourse-based study or research project.
Content: This course is designed to provide support for postgraduate/doctoral researchers who are new to discourse studies. This course will discuss the development of discourse studies as a field over the years, what theoretical and methodological frameworks are available for researchers, and what topics can be studied utilizing discourse studies. Additionally, the course will engage participants in hands-on practice of a specific discourse analytical approach(s) so as to demonstrate its applicability to real-world data examples.
Acoustic methods
This course introduces students to the basic principles of acoustics, sound spectrograms, and signal processing methods. In the practical session, we will focus on acoustic analysis of speech using computer software, Praat. Students will learn how to collect and analyze acoustic data and how to use acoustic data to investigate speech-related research questions.
