XDOC2003 Academic articles: Coherent sections (2 op)

This course aims at increasing students’ awareness of the most common organisational principles of research articles whilst also addressing variation between different disciplines and journal requirements. Discourse analytical models will be applied to analyse the underlying structure of individual sections thus helping students to improve their own writing. Participants will receive peer- and-instructor feedback.
Osaamistavoitteet
On completion of the course, participants are expected to…
- understand the function of coherence and cohesion in academic discourse
- be aware of the general communicative purpose and rhetorical structure of different sections of academic texts within their field
- be able to analyse the schematic structure of the various sections of academic articles by identifying the sequential patterns of communicative acts (moves and steps)
- demonstrate effective and purposeful application of functional principles and strategies when writing these sections
