Content

The sound and quality of one's speech is the most important factor in spoken communication. Whatever an individual's position in life, speaking Chinese clearly and phonetically correctly will make one better understood. This course helps students reduce common pronunciation errors and develop more natural intonation and stress patterns. The course covers all the main aspects of Chinese phonetics: Phonemic system (vowels and consonants), an introduction to pinyin, the Chinese phonetic alphabets, the four tones of intonation as well as the cultural background of some pronunciation of the characters.

Completion methods

Contact teaching, pronunciation and listening practices in pairs and in language laboratory.

Learning outcomes

The students learn the Chinese consonant and vowel sounds, intonation, word stress, word reductions, sentence rhythm and blending words in conversation.
