Description

This course focuses on using language for communication by training all 5 basic language skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing, and cultural awareness. During the course some lessons will be taught according to the ‘Flipping the classroom’-principle: students will be expected to prepare for some lessons watching videos online in which theory (grammar for example) is explained. During the next lesson this theory will be put into practice by in class discussions and in class individual and group assignments. When in class, learners are expected to actively participate and engage in coursework.

Learning outcomes

Students learn to form longer sentences. They get acquainted with useful phrases and expressions and build up a more complex vocabulary. The course focuses on oral and written communication in social, work and study situations. Belgian and Dutch culture is intertwined with the course material. Some of the grammatical items that will be discussed during this course: the perfectum, understanding the use of er, the relative pronoun, syntax.Target level at the end of the course: CEFR A2, approaching B1.

Description of prerequisites

This course is for students who successfully finished Hollanti 2 or who have taken a similar course outside Jyväskylä university. When in doubt about your level, contact the teacher.

Completion methods

Method 1

Evaluation criteria:
Learners are expected to complete one group assignment and three individual assignments (speaking, reading, writing). In addition, listening and speaking are evaluated at the end of the course through an oral exam. The end grade that the students receive is based on performance in the assignments, the oral exam and by regularly handing in homework during the course.
