IHMJ1102 Research Ethics Online Course (1–5 op)

This course is situated in the national Findocnet Moodle environment. Participants can do it remotely and at their own pace. It starts by introducing a theoretical framework that can be used as a tool in ethical deliberation. This framework guides participants to evaluate decision options in an ethically challenging situation from the perspectives of consequences, rules and virtues. The national Responsible Conduct of Research code (TENK) is introduced as well as official violations and procedures relating to it. The course explores ethical questions related to all phases of research: to planning and conducting of research and to sharing of its results. Also, the local guidelines of the University of Jyväskylä are introduced. The overwhelming majority of themes fit all scientific disciplines.

Osaamistavoitteet
· Participants are able to recognise and analyse key research ethical questions.
· Participants are able to formulate ethical research plans and responses to ethical challenges by applying key ethical theories and approaches.
· Participants recognise and understand key ethical principles guiding research
· Participants understand the Finnish Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines, processes for dealing with research misconduct, and processes for applying research license or ethical review.
· Participants are able to Identify rights and responsibilities as a researcher.
· Participants gain a deeper understanding about the ethical questions and challenges of their own research project.
· Participants understand how ethical decisions and choices influence society and research community.

To complete the course and get 1 ECTS, participants are required to:
• actively engage with the course materials and discussions (1 ECTS version of the Moodle course have to be chosen!),
• do all quizzes associated with each topic (you are expected to study the material before attempting the quiz!),
• familiarize themselves with the local guidelines and institutions.
To complete the course and get 3 ECTS, participants are required to:
• actively engage with the course materials and discussions (3 ECTS version of the Moodle course have to be chosen!),
• do both the pre- and post-assignment,
• answer essay assignments associated with most topics. Both online and file upload answers are possible. The length of the answers should be about one page.
• familiarize themselves with the local guidelines and institutions.
To get 5 ECTS and/or personal feedback to one’s research project, participants are required to do the 3 ECTS version of the course and have a presentation in a workshop.
