Content

The course covers a wide range of aspects with the focus on the interaction between the transformations of the Russian and Soviet political system throughout the twentieth century as well as the country's economy and social structure, and the mentality of the people living in the country. The purpose of the course is to describe the major features of the "Russian civilization" as it was taking shape mostly throughout the 20th century, and to make it more understandable to the students who are interested in the Russian language, culture and history.

Completion methods

Participants are required to attend lectures. Following lectures students will answer questions related to each lecture and return the answers to those questions to the appropriate folder in Moodle.


Learning outcomes

After completion of the course students are expected to:

- be aware of the economic, political and social trends in the Russian society in the 20th century,
- be aware of intra-cultural values and attitudes embedded in the Russian society,
- be able to distinguish between the “official” presentation and interpretation of Russian history, politics, achievements and failures and the alternative interpretations,
- pass their own judgment upon matters related to Russia and the Russian society in the 20th century and nowadays,
- be provided with an in-depth understanding of the Russian mentality.
