The course seeks to critically examine how globalization and media mutually reinforce transformation in human communication and society. Media is understood broadly and in a “non-media-centric” way: we will examine current transformations in media technologies, media culture, media genres, and media practice. Issues of social justice, such as agency and participation will run through all aspects of media and globalization that the course examines.

Course: 80% attendance requirement and completion of written assignments. Independent study: book exam, study circle or written essay.
Osaamistavoitteet
On completion of this module the student will
- know what are the most important theories of globalization, key concepts and their relation to media and culture
- be able to train critical thinking skills to analyze and discuss media’s role in globalization and
- learn to examine how globalization shapes media environment and media practices and how media produces globalization.
