ENVS1138 Light in aquatic ecosystems - field course (3 op)
Kuvaus
· An intensive field course at a field station.
· Monday morning. Introduction to the course, the tasks and available facilities.
Monday afternoon: field measurements, laboratory measurements, preparation for the field day
· Tuesday: A field day. Optical measurements in the field and collection of water samples for laboratory measurements. Lunch in the field.
· Wednesday: A laboratory day. Optical measurements in laboratory.
· Thursday: Calculation day. Calculating optical parameters from field and laboratory measurements. Preparing figures and tables for the data for a seminar presentation. Sauna.
· Friday: Reporting day. Finalizing the presentation for a seminar. A seminar about the results collected during the course. Clean up.
· Within two weeks after the course: a written report from the activities during the course.
Osaamistavoitteet
After completing this course, the student should be able to…..
· measure common optical properties in lakes (in situ), e.g., vertical attenuation of solar radiation into a lake
· measure optical properties of natural waters in laboratory, e.g., absorption coefficient of chromophoric dissolved organic matter
· analyze and calculate meaningful optical properties from raw data based on theory and examples given in ENVS1137
· report (optical) data as a platform presentation and a written report

Light in aquatic ecosystems - field course (3 op)
o Participation on the activities of field course (measurements in the field, in the laboratory, calculation of results, reporting the results in seminar). Preparation of a written report from the activities during the course. The students will finance their personal costs (travelling to the site of course, accommodation, food).
