Description

At the University of Jyväskylä, history research, teaching and learning focuses on analysing and understanding social change. The study of history provides the tools to interpret cultural, political, institutional, mental, ideological and economic changes over time, and to reflect on their meanings for individuals, communities and society. The aim of the studies is to understand why and how communities and society have become part of historical processes that often develop over a long period of time. Thus history helps people understand how the past affects the present, and how today’s choices can have long-term consequences.

The study of history gives students the tools to find information efficiently, analyse sources critically and use these to produce new knowledge. History graduates go on to become, for example, researchers, teachers, archivists and educators, and work in communications, journalism and administrative roles.

The master’s degree in history consists of a master’s thesis and other advanced studies. In the joint courses, students become familiar with research methods, the history of historiography and the philosophy of history/historical thinking. All students also complete a master’s seminar. These studies prepare students for independent research and writing their master’s thesis. Elective courses provide an opportunity to focus on themes the student is interested in. The degree includes elective studies, which may include an optional internship.
