This course centers on Performing Resistance summer school program that is available online 16-20 June 2020. The course explores the ways in which artistic practices build spaces of resistance, forms of subversion, counter-hegemonic postures on migration, actions capable of outlining other visions of and in contemporary cities. The online lectures and dialogues investigate the relationship between the arts, migration and citizenship, deconstructing paternalistic, neocolonial and exoticizing positions that stigmatize the migrant as a fetishized "figure”. They also transversally discuss issues such as the borderline between art and activism, the creation of alternative dispositif of knowledge, countering silenced and invisibilized subjectivities, the notion of participation, the dynamics of a re-appropriation of public space, right to the city, forms of "affective" citizenship, critically reflecting on borders and mobility. In addition to online lectures and discussions the students read and respond to academic articles and write a short analysis of an artwork or cultural project of their choice by using concepts learned during the course.
Karina Horsti is the responsible instructor, contact: karina.horsti@jyu.fi. The course is a collaboration with University of Bologna and Atlas of Transitions Biennale 2020.
The assignments can be written in English, Finnish or Swedish and they have to be completed by 31 July 2020.
The course is completed as an independent study following the program and guidelines below.
Mode of completion (note different requirements for the BA and the MA level)
Online lectures and discussions (8hrs) 16 – 20 June 2020

Follow at least three of them in live stream (see the links on the website, both Facebook and Youtube are being used). Post one question or comment during three live stream sessions in Facebook or Youtube chat. The streams will be available for a few days on the site under each introductory page so you can follow the five other discussions at any other time. 10 lectures/discussions are available in English. Make notes of the lectures and discussions and use them in the analysis assignment.
After 20 June, request a certificate of attendance by writing to laboratori@atlasoftransitions.eu.
Submit the certificate to “Certificates” folder in Moodle.
