This self-study option introduces the key approaches to discourse studies and how the concept of discourse is understood in each. The readings help make connections and comparisons between different research traditions in the study of language and the study of discourse. The readings will also provide real-life examples from a wide range of contexts and settings, from written to spoken to visual modality, to help students apply the theoretical concepts and understanding in their future studies.

Students' exam answers show good command of the conceptual, theoretical and methodological aspects of the topic and student knows how to apply what has been read in the exam answers. There are two questions in the exam, both of which need to be answered and passed in order for the exam to be approved.

- understand and explain the different definitions of ‘discourse’
- discuss the intricate connections between language, discourse, context and the world from the point of view of discourse studies
- connect and compare discourse-analytic perspectives on language with other approaches to language
- apply insights and concepts from discourse studies to real-world (e.g. professional) problems
