XENA009 Academic Writing Module: Effective Introductions and Conclusions (2 op)

This module is intended for doctoral students. The Introduction and the Conclusion sections occupy a rhetorically important position in a research paper, but writing them is often the most challenging task. The aim of this module is to help you write these two sections more purposefully, while being aware of their overall function and developing a more coherent structure that follows academic and field-specific conventions. Participants will use the main principles and strategies to analyze already published articles, as well as to improve their own texts with the help of self-assessment and peer/teacher feedback.
Arviointiperusteet
Compulsory and active participation. Successful completion of core assignments. Final grading is based on the applicable grading scale for the course.
Osaamistavoitteet
- understand the structure of the Introduction and Conclusion sections of research articles from a functional perspective
- identify the rhetorical moves that are typically present in these sections in your own field
- demonstrate effective and purposeful application of functional principles and strategies when writing these sections
