Sisältö

In this two-day course the teacher will present and explore emerging issues particular to qualitative and innovation research methods. The teacher will review a selection of traditional qualitative research methods and explore ways of applying as well as analyzing qualitative data. The teacher will also spend some time discussing and explaining the challenges faced with writing up qualitative research work for academic conferences, journals and practitioner-oriented audiences.

Students should read Myers, M.D. "Qualitative Research in Information Systems," AISWorld Section on Qualitative Research, www.qual.auckland.ac.nz to become acquainted with the basic concepts of qualitative research in Information Systems.

You should also read the following two articles:

Pre-assignment

Before the course begins enrolled students should describe/ give opinion (with references to or in line of other arguments) about qualitative research and their expectations and goals regarding the course.

Deliverables:

· Students will prepare a one-page summary of expectations and goals they hope to achieve by taking this course.

· Each student should answer the following questions:

o What is qualitative research?

o What are the essential scientific criteria for qualitative inquiry?

o Why and for what you need qualitative research?

o How would you carry out a qualitative study?

o What would you like to learn about qualitative research methodology?

· These deliverables must be delivered a week before the start of the course.


Post Course Assignment

Learning Diary

Another part of the course assignment is a learning diary in which each IHME/Methodology Centre for Human Sciences student is after the course describing

1) what was learned and why,

2) what was not learned and why,

3) what should be taught further, and

4) how teaching should be arranged.

· The assignment must be delivered within two weeks after the completion of the course together with the post course assignment

Osaamistavoitteet

The goals of this course are as follows:
1) Research Methods: Students will understand how a variety of qualitative research methods can be used in business and management
2) Data Analysis: Students will be introduced to various approaches to qualitative data analysis
3) Critical Thinking Skills: Students will analyze and critically evaluate a few published examples of qualitative research in information systems
