This course gives an overview of the history of the English-speaking peoples from a cultural and social perspective. Special attention will be given to historical events that have shaped the values, norms and ways of thinking in these countries. The lectures will integrate references to literary works, songs and films that provide additional insights into the socio-cultural context of history.
Suoritustavat
There are two ways of completing the course.
1) Contact teaching: lecture attendance and independent study of the assigned readings. Smaller home assignments.
2) Distance learning: watching the video recordings of the lectures and independent study of the assigned readings.
Open University: contact teaching, web-based tasks, learning assignments, an exam or a combination of these (methods of study will be specified in the annual teaching programme before the start of each academic year).

Written examination at the end of the course
Open University: Active participation (100% attendance usually required). Learning assignments or an exam.

• identify connections between culture, history and society
• understand the development and expansion of British influence around the world
• describe the main historical events and their influence on society and culture
• understand the historical evolution of British and American character
• explain the historical background of values and norms in the countries studied.

Target group: First year students
It is advised that the students attend and participate in the lectures, but attendance will not be checked regularly. Please note that learning is more efficient (and enjoyable) if you come to class. The alternate (distance) way of completing the course should only be considered as an option in case of course overlap or health issues.
