Sisältö
Literacy can be understood as reading and writing or as the production and consumption of texts. This course examines what it means to be able to read and write, in first and additional languages, in contemporary multilingual and multimodal society.
Suoritustavat
Methods of study: Readings, participation in class work, small scale research project in pairs/groups of three or four
Arviointiperusteet
Active participation in class and final paper, 80% attendance requirement

After completing the course the students will be able to
- explain what the concept of literacy(ies) means as a cognitive and social phenomenon
- describe the multimodal and multilingual nature of literacy (or the use of texts)
- describe different contexts in which literacy plays a role
- explain how literacy matters in societal participation
- explain how literacy is taught and learned, in first and additional languages
- reflect on the consequences of contemporary multilingual and multimodal society on the use of texts
