Social Sciences of Sport comprises two main academic disciplines, namely sport sociology and sport planning and administration. Sport sociology is a more theoretically oriented discipline, whereas sport planning and administration is a study subject with emphasis on practical sport management issues.
Scientifically, sport sociology is a special field of sociology. It differs from the parent science and the other special fields especially by its research subject. Sport sociologists examine the questions of sport, physical activity and, in a wider range also, various phenomena of corporality.
Sport Planning and administration is an academic study subject that is often and more generally called sport management. Sport planning and administration is a multidisciplinary and cooperative field which crosses many boundaries and has a social scientific approach consisting of planning, administration and political science. The subject also examines management and decision making from a behavioural science point of view. A great amount of emphasis is put on questions regarding the methodology of planning and its application to communal and land-use planning. Sports planning and administration, as a discipline, combines the basic scientific foundations of planning and the applications and practical implementation of planning and evaluation, especially in the public and voluntary sectors. The purpose of the subject is to provide the students with the basic knowledge and skills to work in leading expert positions within sport administration in the public, voluntary and private sectors.
